SARGENT, Charles Henry

No.8956, Private, Charles Henry SARGEANT
Aged 20

1st Battalion, Suffolk Regiment
Killed in Action on Sunday, 2nd May 1915

An Old Contemptible

Charles Henry Sargent was born in Exning (could be Exning Road,Newmarket)(Newmarket Q3-1896 3B:530), son of Robert and Lizzie Eliza SARGENT (née HENSBY).
This family name is spelled in many ways. His father seems to have been Robert SARGENT, born in Ashley, a stableman who died in Newmarket in Q4-1900 aged 37.

1901 census...Aged 6, he was at 5 Field Terrace Road, Newmarket with his widowed mother Lizzie Eliza SARGENT [35] born Exning, his brother William [11] born Newmarket, brother Herbert [3] and sister Elizabeth [1] both born in Exning. Also there and possibly related were Esther WING [14] born Exning and Ben SARGENT [40] born Ashley ( possibly Charles' uncle). They were boarding with the CLARY family. Also there was another boarder, Alfred NORTON [24] labourer, born Detling, Kent.

It appears that his mother married Alfred NORTON in 1902, but so far neither have been identified in the 1911 census.

1911 census...Very likely the Charles Sargeant, aged 14 a farm labourer born Exning, boarding with George and Rebecca STIRLING at Fen Bank, Isleham.

He enlisted in Bury St Edmunds.
The 1st Suffolks were holding a brigade front opposite Wytschaete Ridge on the edge of the battle raging round Ypres.
The war diary simply says "Situation quiet, ? shelling of Hd Qtrs, casualties". not very instructive, but Charles was their only loss that day.

Local press report:-
Information has also been received of the death of another Soham soldier, Pte.Charles Sargent, of the 2nd Suffolk Regiment, who has been in residence with Mr. and Mrs. George Bailey of "The Piece". Pte. Sargent enlisted about 12 months ago and went with his company to Ireland. Soon after the outbreak of war he was sent to France, and he returned home about March, having been wounded in action. He returned to France, but unfortunately met his death on May 15th.
The customary official notice has been received from the War Office and also a letter of condolence from the King and Queen.
